Warning gas will run out soon met with scorn by industry
- Details
The plumbing and gas fitting industry is pouring scorn on claims that gas will run out soon in New Zealand and people need to think twice before buying gas-fired appliances.
The argument began when Consumer New Zealand warned that New Zealand natural gas reserves were forecast to last for only 10 years.
It suggested people should take this into account when buying gas heaters.
The Law Even Politicians Don't Know
- Details
Deputy Labour leader Jacinda Ardern has been an unwitting - but effective - publicist in the dangers of do-it-yourself renovations to homes.
But the danger remains for many unknowing DIYers who may out themselves at risk financially or in a health and safety way.
In February, Ardern was featured in a newspaper article where she volunteered she and her partner had successfully installed a new toilet in their Auckland home "without flooding the place". Only problem was, such work must, by law, be carried out by a registered plumber.
Urgency needed on skill shortages
- Details
It's time big business and the government collaborated to introduce effective long-term upskilling programmes to relieve skills shortages affecting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in New Zealand, according to a senior SME adviser.
Harry Ferreira, Head of Small Business for BNZ, says the problem facing SMEs is global, well-known and difficult to solve - but a focused series of programmes would address the shortage hindering the growth of many companies.
Plumbing nightmares for homeowners from leaky flexible braided hoses
- Details
Leaky flexible braided hoses have caused a plumbing nightmare for some homeowners.
Flexible braided hoses that connect to more rigid pipes have been the source of flooding and dangerous gas leaks when they fail. They first started to be installed about 15 years ago, in the place of copper pipes, and have become extremely widespread in residential construction and renovation.
Plumbing industry under the pump after Auckland floods
- Details
February's torrential rain and flash flooding created more work than the plumbing industry could handle, and blocked gutters and leaky roofs often had to wait more than a week just to be looked at.
It put additional pressure on an existing shortage of plumbers - an estimated 600 in Auckland and 2000 nationwide.
